Joseph Pilates, once a sick child, who then dedicated to perfect his body all his life, firmly believed that all our health issues can be attributed to bad posture, muscle imbalances and inefficient breathing. The movement system he developed as answer to these problems - Contrology as he called it - focuses on re-balancing the body to attain correct alignment, strength and flexibility as well as proper coordination and adequate breathing capacity.
The unique series of exercises he designed for both the mat and the innovative Pilates apparatus he invented - such as the Reformer, the Cadillac, the Wunda chair and the Ladder Barrel - works the whole of your body. You will not perform any movement rapidly or repeat them excessively. Instead, you will focus on quality to create correct muscle memory. Your abdominals, back muscles and buttocks serve as the centre of all movement, allowing the rest of your body to move freely. This focus on core stabilization makes you stronger from the inside out.
At first sight you may be sceptical about how this “gentle” form of exercises with much lying on the back could boast such big benefits, especially if you are one of those who like a workout that is challenging and intense with heavy weights and fast speeds. We promise you will be surprised that these exercises are not only for unfit beginners. Pilates, when done correctly, requires huge mental focus and true muscle strengths.
